Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard: how companies rank and what moves you between them.

Carriers price term by rate class. Names differ slightly but the order is set: Preferred Plus (Preferred Best or Super Preferred in some), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then table ratings for higher risk. Tobacco users have their own classes, priced higher.

What underwriters look at

Height and weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, cancer or heart disease in the family before 60, moving violations, medications, job and hobbies, smoking or nicotine. Top classes need almost everything clean; Preferred allows a little more; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed problems like treated high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

When you answer: Excellent means Preferred Plus, Very good means Preferred, Good means Standard Plus, and Average means Standard. The carrier confirms your final class after underwriting. If unsure, quote two classes and weigh them, letting the application decide. Picking a better class won't lower the real price; it only makes the estimate less precise.

Susman Insurance Agency finds carriers whose rules suit your situation, which often matters more than comparing ads.
